What counts as urgent

When your child needs help

A knocked-out adult tooth is the most time-critical: it needs to be back in the socket within the hour.

Is it urgent?

When to call straight away

Trauma, swelling, or pain that is stopping your child sleeping. A poking wire or a loose bracket can usually be managed at home with orthodontic wax until we see you.

Four steps

What to do when it happens

  1. Call the practice

Tell our team what happened. For a knocked-out adult tooth, call straight away.

  2. If the office is closed

Call 973-706-8339 for instructions. For a knocked-out adult tooth or a serious injury, go to the nearest emergency room.

  3. Protect it until we check

Orthodontic wax over a poking wire or a loose bracket. Never cut a wire yourself.

  4. Plan your visit

Seen as soon as we can, and told plainly what happens next.

What will the plan cover?

Benefits differ from plan to plan. Call with the plan name on the card and we will confirm your child’s benefits.

Five common questions

Questions about Dental Emergencies

What if my child chips or breaks a tooth?

Call the office. Prompt treatment relieves discomfort and prevents further damage. Depending on the injury, the repair may be a tooth-colored filling, dental bonding, a pediatric crown or another conservative treatment.

Are baby teeth worth treating?

Yes. They hold space for the adult teeth, and an abscess in a baby tooth can damage the adult tooth forming above it.

Can I stay in the room?

Yes, for as long as you want to be. Very young children are examined on your lap.

Do you see children with additional needs?

Please call before booking to discuss your child’s needs, comfort preferences and any accommodations. The team can help you plan an appropriate visit.

How do I book?

Call 973-706-8339 to arrange your appointment with the office, or start from the booking page and choose orthodontics or pediatric dentistry.
